In a small mountain hermitage, an old monk and a young novice are sitting face to face, discussing the Way. When the novice asks, “Master, what is the Way?”, the old monk silently raises his index finger toward the sky. After that, the novice goes around the temple showing his raised index finger to everyone he encounters, whether fellow practitioners, attendants, or lay Buddhists, and his behavior eventually reaches the old monk’s ears.
One day, the old monk summoned the young novice. He then told him to hold up his index finger. The moment the novice raised his finger, the old monk drew a knife and cut it off. Clutching his bleeding hand, the novice roughly demanded to know why his finger had been severed. The old monk said nothing and simply raised his own index finger. On that day, the young novice awakened to the Way.
Dolphins communicate with one another through whistles. Their communication has recently undergone changes. As humans generate increasing noise in the oceans through activities such as offshore drilling, construction, and ship traffic, traditional modes of vocalization are increasingly being disrupted. In order to communicate in these noise-saturated conditions, dolphins are reported to produce whistles that are louder and longer than before. In the wild, communication is directly tied to survival. When hunting and cooperation are hindered, the risk extends beyond individual animals to threaten entire groups.
In the basement of The Reference, one encounters the eight‑speaker installation, The work plays back a conversation between Laumkon—an artist duo consisting of Qrator and Song Ji Eun—and, as the sound from each speaker collides, the voices are transformed into noise. Because the sound cuts off whenever a viewer draws close to a speaker in an attempt to listen, no coherent meaning can be extracted from the conversation.
With no further contextual information, a viewer encountering this work would readily begin to think in terms of subjects and others, language and communication, exclusion and desire. The conversation being broadcast here consists of signifiers without meaning. More precisely, they are clusters of signifiers (words) that do not correspond to any signified (sense). As you move closer in search of meaning, the speakers mute themselves and verbal interaction is physically cut off. Human beings desire communication and long for someone who will “recognize” them. But what if this longing stems from the fundamental absence of the “I” itself? Where, then, is the proper place for you to situate yourself in this space? Because your very appearance triggers a break in communication, you become the one who makes meaning flee, while at the same time being deprived of the possibility of satisfying your desire through the coupling of language and meaning. You are erased within the system of language. Accordingly, 〈ㅁ〉 is a configuration of the impossibility of communication and the impossibility of pleasure.
Laumkon is a term Qrator uses to refer to toothbrushing. Toothbrushing is an act that separates civilization from barbarism. In a civilized society, keeping one’s teeth clean and maintaining a body free of bad breath is a condition of normality. This norm, disguised as the toothbrush, penetrates every corner of the body’s most intimate mouth. The reason that washing one’s face and brushing one’s teeth have become the very first acts of the morning is that the head has become something social. We remove parts of ourselves that might cause discomfort in others (in particular, the beard, which is a literal figure of barbarism, has its “head” cut off every day). Through this, we perform a purifying ritual that mechanically tidies up the image of ourselves that will be shown to others.
Toothbrushing is not limited to hygiene undertaken “for others” (even when no one else is present). It is the entrance through which food passes and the exit through which words emerge. In other words, the mouth is a multilayered site through which desire moves in and out, and a border surface between being and the world. Just as an obsessive–compulsive patient washes their hands to alleviate guilt, the concrete manifestation of a Sisyphean wish to police the mouth takes shape as toothbrushing. In this sense, it is intriguing that Qrator, who lives with Wernicke’s aphasia, and Song Ji Eun have chosen toothbrushing as their working name. “To Qrator, speech at times sounds like clotted noise between one word and another,”1) and the words he utters lose their way mid‑course and are stripped of meaning. Laumkon therefore functions as an expression of, a wish for, and a complex metaphor for the barrenness of the relationship between language and Qrator himself. (After all, does speech produced while brushing one’s teeth not sound like a muddled noise?)
Sisyphean behavior is both a punishment and a harbinger of change. Within the infinitude of his penal labor, Sisyphus secures a deferral of time and becomes a human who reconstructs the world through the stone. Qrator’s condition is not a mere lack, but a kind of prerequisite, and that prerequisite is also a condition of transformation. Today, voices that traverse the globe via satellite communication systems hop indiscriminately from sound waves to vibrations, electricity, and numbers before reaching their recipient. Just as the voice is repeatedly transformed by its successive media, Qrator likewise uses art as a medium through which to emit meaning. The conversion formula that enables this meaning to be conveyed is not language‑to‑art, but Qrator‑to‑viewer. Through 〈ㅁ〉, the viewer undergoes a transition in which they must move beyond the position of mere recipient, don Qrator’s skin, and within his sensory apparatus contemplate the absence of language.
On November 16, 1974, the radio telescope at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico transmitted a message toward Messier 13 (M13), a globular cluster in the constellation Hercules within our galaxy. This message is expected to reach its destination, M13, around the year 27,000 CE.
Following a proposal by Carl Sagan, the Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft, launched in 1977, each carried an LP record containing a variety of information and messages about Earth. Intended to convey humanity’s message to extraterrestrial life, this record includes greetings in many languages from Earth, songs, and a range of other data.
The artist Ezra Orion carried out the project Super-Cathedral, in which he imagined sculpture on a galactic scale. On April 27, 1992, as part of events for the International Space Year, Super-Cathedral I was realized. From various locations around the world, laser beams stretching billions of kilometers were fired into space to draw parallel lines intersecting the Milky Way at right angles, thereby constructing a cosmic cathedral of light. Encompassing the entire solar system, this immaterial sculpture transcends time—a work that forever recedes from Earth…
How are we to receive a voice that is transmitted through speakers? This points to a splitting of the voice itself. Recorded sounds have undergone a kind of binary circumcision and been mechanically reorganized; even if they travel from their original analog waveforms through data packets and back into waves again, they are no longer ontologically identical to the former waves. In the same way, once this voice is separated from us and played back, it is no longer mine, but an object reconstituted by a machine‑other. This is part of the Sisyphean process in which Qrator and Song Ji Eun are situated. Just as the audience listens to a reconstructed conversation, their dialogue is always subject to adjustment. Song Ji Eun, as if exposed to noise, must undergo a transformation of speech. This conversation, in which she offers words that are slower, shorter, and simpler than her own rhythm, is repeated until a word is found that accords with Qrator’s intention. Because Qrator’s language slips outside the phonological system, it has to pass through Song Ji Eun, and thus standardized language can exist only as a version sanctioned by her. In the process of listening to speech, segmenting it, reassembling it, and transmitting it, the machine and Song Ji Eun are isomorphic. What we read and hear, therefore, is not Qrator’s intention itself, but a model of that intention.
Laumkon’s 2024 media work, The Man Who Lost His Home takes its title from Heidegger’s claim that “language is the house of Being.” By drawing this parallel, one could just as well speak of “the man who has lost his being.” The figure of a man who has lost his being and of whom only a model remains can be written as ㅁ. This empty center is Qrator, of whom only a model is left, and it is for this reason that we are able to don his outer shell (ㅁ), step inside it, and confirm the absence of the “I.” If mind is bone, then such abstraction is directly tied to the condition of the body. ㅁ is not only a broken or incompatible character on a computer screen and a sign for Qrator’s language, but also resembles the graph 口, the mouth. When the mouth is extended down to the anus, it becomes clear that the status of the human is no different from that of a doughnut: a hollow digestive tract wrapped in bone, flesh, and muscle. In this sense, 〈ㅁ〉 gives form to the empty center of the language‑subject.
This fact is deeply unsettling, which is why we are inclined to endorse the comforting illusion that Qrator somehow “exists” within the standardized language mediated by Song Ji Eun. But Laumkon directly denies such corrections. This is what makes the message of 〈ㅁ〉 so painful: rather than romanticizing the endless adjustments between the two in the name of bonds or love, the work confronts the self that is in the process of being‑translated. Born out of this schizoid current, 〈ㅁ〉 never allows sound, meaning, viewer, or anything else in the space to settle into a stable “fixed” position—just as the Arecibo message, the Voyager Golden Record, and Ezra Orion’s sculpture endlessly recede into outer space. And so, how useful art proves to be: that which is erased within utterance can nonetheless be made manifest through art.
